The Associated Students of Mills College (ASMC) is the voice of the student body to the College administration on academic issues, honor code concerns and more.

Here’s the Campanil guide to your ASMC committees and the executives who chair them.

Modesta Tamayo, President

The Student Services Committee advocates for students’ needs in regular meetings with Housing Management and Dining Services, Campus Facilities, Student Health Services, Public Safety and other on-campus resources. The Health Senator attends college health services meetings. Tamayo chooses a committee member to serve on the Alumnae Association and act as a liaison between students and alumnae.

Office hours: Monday 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Rebecca Freeman, Vice President

The Diversity and Social Justice Committee is all about inclusion and creating a safe enough space for students. It works closely with the College Diversity Committee, Student Diversity Programs and Joining All Mills Affinity Associations. The committee also meets with and coordinates information and events among all affinity groups on campus, like the Mary Atkins Lounge and the Women of Color Resource Center.

The Finance Committee handles students’ special funding requests and other questions about student club financing. Special funding is available to all undergrads, but students must show ASMC that the money will be spent in a way that gives back to the student body. Past uses of special funding have included paying guest speaker fees, organizing dances and representing Mills at conferences.

The committee also publishes the Mills Academic Research Journal, where students showcase their undergraduate work.

Office hours: Tuesday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Should Mills go smoke-free?

ASMC will hold a public discussion about this issue at their Oct. 10 full board meeting in GSB 124.

The smoke-free dialogue begins at 6:45 p.m. The meeting is open to the Mills community–undergrads and graduate students, faculty and staff, smokers and non-smokers. The objective is conversation; ASMC will not be coming to a vote that night.

For questions, email asmc@mills.edu or stop by the ASMC office in Rothwell E.
