Grant slaying sparks protest

For the past two months, some Mills students have rallied over the death of Oscar Grant III on Jan. 1, saying his death illustrates the need to fight police brutality.

Bystanders at the Fruitvale BART recorded 22 year-old Grant's death on cellphones and posted videos of the incident on YouTube.

Economic stimulus package affects Oakland

The 2009 economic stimulus package, passed and signed by President Obama on Jan. 28, sparked a discussion about how it will affect Oakland, and Mills College students in particular.

The American Recovery and Readjustment Act is an $819 billion stimulus plan that will use government spending and tax measures to support the economy during the recession, according to a Jan.

New language program comes to Mills

In summer 2009, Mills College will host the Middlebury College Language Program on its campus.

The program provides intensive summer classes for students nationwide 18 years or older in four different languages. The languages that will be taught at Mills include French, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic with a curriculum focus towards fluency and linguistic comprehension both in and outside the classroom.
